Would the iPad be good to use at boarding school?
Reader question: The new apple ipad is cool but i want to know if it would be a good computer to have at school in place of a laptop?
Chop-suey is not a native Chinese dish, it was created in California by Chinese immigrants.

the ipad isn’t a computer. I dont get why everyone thinks it is. It’s just a giant iphone. It would not be good for school.

The iPad must be compared to an Amazon Kindle not a computer!
It has no phone capabilities, no CD/DVD, no USB and it is not multitasking, it’s just a reader, a web cruiser and a big iPod rolled into one!
If you need to use, say, office programs, games and Photoshop (or similar), get a laptop!
The nearest thing to an office program will be the iWorks Special edition for iPad.

yes. I dont know why some people say it isnt a computer because it is it is iphone. ipod touch touch, newspapers, computers, tv put together to form awesomeness

if it doesn’t get stolen in the first week…
its at best a mini netbook, not a laptop.
you’d still need a computer to connect to regularly, and as most of the world isn’t mac compatible, you may have some issues with file/system compatibility at school.

It’s not a computer, nor is it a replacement for one. If you need a primary computer, buy a full-sized laptop, not Apple’s new expensive novelty item.

before i answer, ask yourself this & answer honestly. why is the ipad cool? because it has apple logo on it? & why do you think you need one if you dont know what it is or does.
ok, firstly, the ipad is not a computer as we know it. it is a multimedia device. it will allow you to view books & print media. you will be able to browse the web, play music, watch videos ( although its 4:3 aspect ratio is not widescreen so your vids may look stretched out of shape) & type.
the screen is too big to thumb tap to type like an ipod or iphone which means you will need to set it down to type, it has a curved back which causes it to wobble when typing ( you could buy the keyboard & stand accessories, more money) there is no usb, no hard drive, no flash support ( half the videos online you wont be able to view) you will have access to plenty of apps, but as usual you will be dictated to by apple.
of course your going to need the top model with 3g & wifi plus the keyboard. add monthly 3g subscription, your going to be looking at around $1000.
typical apple you cant change out batteries.
in a nutshell it is an ipod touch & ereader for the jolly green giant. nothing more, it is simply not designed to be a computer replacement.
also, keep in mind that this is not going be a wow fashion accessory like the iphone or ipod, it’s not like your going to carry this with you all over town to impress your friends. imagine the laughs when you pull it out of your european man purse you will need to carry it. try the lenovo ideapad, it’s the same thing but it has the added advantages of linux in touchpad mode & comes with a cool keyboard folding case that when docked switches to windows 7 & gives you a real OS. it came out before the ipod & does more for the same price.

It’s just an oversize iPod Touch. It doesn’t have multitasking or flash. In other words, you cannot write a report and research on the web at the same time.
