What is the difference in the new coin nfl coin toss rule from last year?

Reader question: The following description of the new rule is taken from nfl.com:

» Second half coin toss: Clubs will now have the option to defer the opportunity to kick or receive the kickoff to the second half.

My question is this. How in the world is this any different from last years rule where the team that won the coin toss could decide whether to kick or receive? For example if the team that won the coin toss decided to kick they would receive at the start of the 2nd half and vice versa. It sounds like the new rule is the same as the old rule only reworded? Can anyone explain this?

  1. i don’t really understand either but this is my take on it.

Say the Redskins win the coin toss and they elect to defer it by defending the north end zone. Then the Cowboys would get to kick or receive. And they choose to kick thinking they would get it in the 2nd half. And the Redskins receive the opening kick.

Now the 2nd Half the Redskins get to choose to kick or receive because they deferred. And they decide to receive. So they get it the 1st and 2nd halves.

That is how i think of it.
