What is the difference between the regular seasonal flu and the swine flu?
Reader question: The symptoms of both are the same and I'm guessing that having the swine flu is more severe, but does anybody know the difference?

The only difference is that the annual flu kills 500,000 people every year, and the swine flu has only killed 148-ish… what’s everyone freaking out about, anyway???

In this case this latest “Swine” flu has been constructed in a lab with human, swine, and also not one but two different strains of North American and European bird flus. The “regular” flu I suppose is a virus that has naturally evolved.
If you are interested in the truth read this very telling article. Unfortunately your realization of your lack of personal freedom will be a bummer. However if we truly want freedom we’re going to have to fight for it as freedom is never truly free.

06 Mar 2009 It’s emerged that virulent H5N1 bird flu was sent out by accident from an Austrian lab [the Austrian branch of US vaccine company, Baxter] last year and given to ferrets in the Czech Republic before anyone realised. As well as the risk of it escaping into the wild, the H5N1 got mixed with a human strain, which might have spawned a hybrid that could unleash a pandemic.
‘This was infected with a bird flu virus.’ Viral Pandemic H5N1 flu threat: Illinois-based Baxter contaminates European labs by error 25 Feb 2009 According to the scientific network PROMED, Baxter International Inc. in Austria “unintentionally contaminated samples with the bird flu virus that were used in laboratories in 3 neighboring countries, raising concern about the potential spread of the deadly disease”. As PROMED reports, the contamination has been discovered when ferrets at a laboratory in the Czech Republic died after being inoculated with vaccine made from the samples early this month. “The material came from Deerfield, Illinois-based Baxter, which reported the incident to the Austrian Ministry of Health, Sigrid Rosenberger, a ministry spokeswoman, said today in a telephone interview”, the network-alert-system is quoting. “This was infected with a bird flu virus,” Rosenberger said. “There were some people from the company who handled it.”

Edit: In response to the poster who said this flu is less deadly than the “regular” flu actually there are many flu virus and if you combine all the others yes they do kill more than this one construct variety. However this variety has a relatively high mortality rate. In Mexico the mortality rate was near 7 %. The Spanish Influenza for example had a mortality rate of something like 2.5%. So the hub ub is all about not letting this go pandemic as then the true toll will be in the millions.

The difference is that regular flu has been around for a while, and some people have either had it or been vaccinated, so not everyone exposed can catch it. The swine flu is new, so no one is immune. Even if the flu is mild, as predicted, there will be more deaths than normal because more people will catch the flu.

there isnt really much of a difference. after the avian flu epidemic people have just gone haywire. no need to worry. unless you went to mexico LOL God bless and lets keep the ones who are sick in our prayers. -livie

The difference is in it’s genetic make up. The DNA is different. But again, viruses mutate extremely quickly, so they are constantly changing. Science can determine the “parentage” of some viruses. This is what helps in making vaccine etc. Your best bet for accurate information on this subject is http://www.cdc.gov., I have read some of the things that the news media has written, and several of them give very bad, incorrect information. Like someone else posted, contrary to popular belief, “regular old flu” kills about 300,000 to 500,000 people each year. The swine flu has been around for a very long time, and has not killed near that many. The instances of swine flu are already stabilizing, meaning, if everyone follows general common sense rules like hand washing, not touching the face etc. (things we should be doing every day) it is likely that the swine flu will soon be on the decline.

The regular seasonal flu or influenza is cause by 3 types of viruses in Humans influenza virus A-B and C cold temperatures lead to drier air which may dehydrate mucus preventing the body from effectively expelling virus particles the virus may linger longer on exposes surfaces doorknobs , countertops, phones and others surfaces. not the swine flu, the swine flu or also called Hog flu and pig flu because it comes from Pigs this strain of influenza has 2 of the human flu strain Influenza virus A and in rare occasions influenza virus C the B influenza virus has not been reported in the swine flu. the seasonal flu usually only last a few days. The swine flu last longer with more symptoms like chills,fever,sore throat,muscle pain,severe headaches, coughing and lot of discomfort and if not treated can be deadly. the difference is regular seasonal flu is a strain of 3 viruses a,b and c that only affect humans and is not deadly the Swine flu affect Pigs ,Hogs and the strain has only 2 of the human kind A and C virus not B and affect humans that are expose to pigs and hogs once the humans are affected they can pass it easily from human to human contact not by exposed surfaces like in seasonal flu. the 2009 flu outbreak in humans that is widely known as ”swine flu” is due to a new strain of influenza A virus type H1N1. that now is affecting the world again wen it start in Mexico last week now in canada and western united states every country that raise swine meaning pigs or hogs this flu is common. good luck and keep safe to avoid contact with this virus just stay away from swine areas or people with symptoms.
