What is the best Media linux operating system?

Reader question: I have heard of:
GeeXboX
LinuxMCE
KnoppMyth
Mythbuntu
Mythdora
Linpus
XBMC Live
but haven't tried any out. Which one is best, unless there are better ones.

  1. I think Mythbuntu would be your best bet although I haven’t tried it, being Ubuntu based gives it more credentials imo

  2. I’ve never heard of any of these, in fact did not even think Linux served this market of media software. However I’ve done my research, and I’ve narrowed down to 2 systems, Linpus and XBMC live.

Both have very user friendly displays, that reminds me of a set top box, in fact XBMC live design is focused around providing that feel.

Linpus seems to be a good program, but they don’t provide much information about it. Their website seems to be thrown together from some free template, youtube videos about Linpus are few, and most don’t contain audio. So I can tell its not a favorite among linux users.

However I’m not judging it solely on that, Linpus is a complete media OS for linux operating systems, but only linux. Though I can’t find the size of XBMC on there site, Linpus seems to be a smaller installation, with fewer requirements.

XBMC win out on this, hands done..even though I can’t find the information on size, the functionality displayed in the videos rival anything I’ve seen. As I suspected when I first saw the X in the name it can run on Xbox. And if I didn’t read it for myself I would strongly believe its a native program within Xbox. However it isn’t, and can run on Xbox, Windows, Mac, Linux, and has a useful Live Disk that you can try it out on. Oh and as said above about MythBuntu, XBMC is built around Ubuntu.

Also it’s apparently Award winning, now I don’t know what award they won, but just how it looks, I can say they deserve a reward. Linpus being a small OS is just as good, the menus and design are simple, and appear to be user friendly. It has 2 display modes, Simple, which reminds me of what most programs are doing to mimic the IPhone display, and PC mode, which is basically a linux desktop…similar to the windows desktop.

    ……..Edit…………….

Wow…WOW…WOW, after writing this i decided to download XBMC as a media center option for my PC, I love it…it is a beautiful program, the music media player Awesome, I haven’t tried the video yet, but I know its going to be a treat. Now I found that the installation is only 127 MBs for Windows, I don’t know what it is for Linux…but I wouldn’t be surprised if its very small.

  3. Mythbuntu is by far the best. Here’s a review on some of it’s features including screenshots etc.

Completed unsolicited and worthless random fact:
When opossums are playing opossum, they are not “playing.” They actually pass out from sheer terror.
