What does the government do with drugs taken from drug busts?
Reader question: What does the government do with the tons and tons of illegal drugs they take when they do a drug bust?

After the case is adjudicated, the court will send notice to the law enforcement agency holding the narcotics in evidence. The law enforcement agency will then dipose of (usually burn) the narcotics.

If u think bout it.. they cud take the drugs themselves n nobody wud even kno bout it. All of us r sayin o ya they burn it.. but u dont think the ppl who work that high on the chain who “destroy” them dont wna take a little puff?? but i guess im jus a person who hopes curious minds like mine r wrong. but good question!

I’ve heard several stories. My mom knew a cop who would take drugs from kids and then do them, and it really got to be a problem. But I also believe that they use the drugs from busts for testing the effects of said drugs. I’m sure that some drugs are also destroyed, such as fields of marijuana and the like. It really depends. The people who bust drugs are really just people, they might do things differently.

They do it like the native americans did, they set up a tent and start a fire in the middle and then throw them all in the fire. but remember that bill clinton never inhales, well at least at the time he said that he had no idea that inhaling meant breathing it in! ha ha

in areas like flint michigan we have a group called fang *flint area narcotics group* they are an undercover agency made up of senior detectives in the michigan state police force. when they confiscate drugs they are used for a conviction and some are destroyed.
others like in my case are used for testing purposes and sent to labs all around the country to be tested for purity and they attempt to locate the original source. all drugs have a sort of DNA. they will attempt to find the original source so they can work there way up the chain of dealers, even when some one doesnt snitch(like myself) and attempt to arrest a bigger “fish”.
also with an undercover organization like fang or magnet (shiawasse countys version of fang) they will use the drugs out on the street to attempt to work deeper into undercover opps. this is very controversial if it happens. but personaly i believe it does. the only way to truly open a trust with a good dealer is to be able to bring somethin to the table your self. some one who is expierenced enough to get the attention of an undercover organization is going to need a 2 way street to open up enough to possibly reveal his sources.
i believe they do return some of the drugs to the street. probably just a small amount if they do. but in my opinion its the only way they would be able to pull off some of the things they do.
also with groups like these the more drugs they pull off the street the more money the state alots to them for there undercover opperations.
also they like to confiscate cash. i know the $1850 they took from me when i got arrested went into the fang street account and was put back onto the street buying more drugs.

I’d have to agree with kelz…some is tested to try and find where it comes from, some is destroyed, some(I would imagine) is used for undercovers. Only corrupt officials would take and do the drugs themselves (which I have no doubt occurs more than people would like to think it does)
