Return to the RNAi World: Rethinking Gene Expression and…

Exclusive video!

Google Tech Talks April 9, 2007 ABSTRACT While investigating the genetic workings of the microscopic worm, C. elegans, Mello and colleague Andrew Fire, PhD, of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, discovered RNAi, a natural but previously unrecognized process by which a certain form of RNA can be manipulated to silence—or interfere with—the expression of a selected gene. The discovery, published in the journal Nature in 1998, has had two extraordinary impacts on biological science. One is as a research tool: RNAi is now the state-of-the-art method by which scientists can knock out the expression of specific genes in cells, to thus define the biological functions of those genes. But just as...

  1. Mello came to my high school and gave a talk similar to this. It was fascinating. And strangely inspirational. Made it one of my biggest life goals to receive the Nobel Prize.

  2. get a life.. your out of your depth to even call RNAi a drug

  3. feels like in the endin .. his answer was irrelevent to the question. (question 2)

  4. there’s no such thing as a miracle drug really. but don’t rule it out completely. i mean we cant even begin to imagine what biomedicine will be like in 20 years or so.

  5. sweet.

  6. Mello presents here an elegant talk that provides many important insights into the nature of modern science, and coveys the power of model systems such as C. elegans. Furthermore, this kind of video is the beginning of a revolution for humanity. Google deserves huge credit for this type of educational work.

  7. I doubt RNAi will be a miracle drug…there’s so many variables involved in organisms. However, it’s a very powerful tool for biological research.
