Relationship between distance and force in the work equation?

Reader question: I know that Work= Force x Distance, so force and distance have an indirect relationship. This doesn't make sense to me though because as force increases, wouldn't distance increase also, not decrease?

  1. think of lifting weights.

If you lift a small wight x meters, doing work to that weight; you would only need to lift a big weight( 2 times the small one) half as high to do the same work
