    Having so many pro fights and taking heavyweight punches late in Toney’s career – past his mid-30′s – surely contributed to the damage that now affects Toney’s speech. It’s often hard to understand what he’s saying.

    @tickyul – Yeah, the thing that will damage Holyfield the most is absorbing the punches at such an advanced age – along with the accumulation of punches he’s been taking since he was like 8 or 9 years old. James Toney noticeably slurs his words. He always loved to spar and preferred sparring over any other type of training. He also loved inside fighting – like Frazier – and while he’s a master of the shoulder roll, he’s never been afraid to take a punch to give a punch.

    @tickyul – Ali can still understand anything anyone says to him, can still watch tv or boxing matches live (he was at the Mayweather-Mosley fight) and can actually still talk a little in the mornings when his voice is a bit stronger. He still talks on the telephone a little bit too.

    @tickyul – Before Ali lost over 3 years to the draft, nobody walked through Ali’s punches. His handspeed was way too fast, which made his punches hurt a lot more than they did after Ali had the layoff and slowed down a bit. Ali’s last 3 fights before he was banned from boxing show just how Ali was approaching his absolute peak – witness the Cleveland Williams, Zora Foley & Ernie Terrell fights and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

    @elnick1000 Uh, yes Ali is punch drunk….no two ways about it. Ali took a lot of his punishment in sparring, did not seem to mind getting hit. He had horrible battles in the ring, he got hit a LOT.
