MERMAIDS is the story of the turbulent relationship between a flamboyant, outrageous mom (Cher) and her two daughters (Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci) who just want a normal, stable life. Socially rebellious and provocative, the mother is reluctant to settle down, even at the request of her two daughters (one of whom, despite being Jewish, longs to enter a convent). The unusual family has moved 18 times in the last 15 years, usually whenever Mrs. Flax senses she might have to commit to a relationship. But this time the girls hope the family will stay put, and their conflicting desires lead to a final, near-tragic result.

PhotonDrive, clearly you don’t know your mythology. Before you go on your pathetic little rant, know your facts. Sirens are not all fun and games like Disney portrays them. Wake up. They are vicious killers who would lure men and sailors to their deaths when they sang. And another thing, the story doesn’t revolve around Christina’s character, it revolves around Winona’s and Chers. Next time shut your face you moron.

Mermaids are good swimmers – like the little girl. They are all fun & lure no one to their doom! If you are that hung up & repressed – go join a monestery! It will inflate your mental illness much further. Perhaps you will jump from a Bell Tower – like Orson Welles?

I believe it’s called Mermaids because mermaids or sirens are beautiful women who men lust over. Sirens lure men to their demise and ruin. And the characters that both Cher and Winona play kind portray Mermaids aka Sirens.
