   You can sign up for a free blog at http://www.wordpress.com and it may handle everything you need.

   However, if you plan to own your blog and want to be able to pick your own domain name etc. you will most likely need to find a web hosting provider and pay for the domain name etc. There are a ton of hosting companies out there that charge anywhere from $3-10 per month. There is a good $3.95/month deal going on right now at http://www.hostslide.com that you can take advantage of.

   Now as for software to install and run your blog, I would highly recommend taking a look at some free open source software. It can be a bit challenging to setup a blog yourself, so you may be interested in using a system such as http://www.simplescripts.com to perform the installation for you. Simplescripts will give you 3 free installs and if you need more than that or want easy to manage upgrades you will want to pay the $15/year license.    There are a few things you can do to make your WordPress blog more secure.

   Keep the latest version of WordPress installed. It will tell you when it needs to be updated.

   Backup your database regularly. There are WordPress plugins that can help with this.

   Change your password to something containing 10 or more characters as well as a few numbers, on a monthly basis.
