The first one sounds awkward and the last one has an unnecessary comma. Your choice should depend on what you are writing about. If you've got a paragraph describing John's life then I would use iii or iv. If writing about Elaine then I'd use ii. For example: "John was a lonely man who didn't get out of the house much. All the people who knew him thought he was strange except for Elaine. John's relationship with Elaine was a unique one." I’d use one of the three middle ones.
