Right click and go to open with –> Select program. A window should pop up with a variety of programs you can use, and a checkmark stating “Always use this program to open this type of file”

There’s not a lot of info to go on here but you can try right clicking on the file and hold ctrl. Choose open with, then choose “choose program…” find msword check “always use this program to open these files”
If it’s a file association problem that should do it.

To make Word your default program simply right click on the file and hit Open With – then select Word from the list and at the bottom of that box there is a check box that says Always use this program for this type of file, click that and that should do the trick.
But the 2nd part of your question threw me off of what you were really asking.. If you cannot get anything to open in word, try opening Word first and open a file thru it that way. See if that helps
