How do I get AOL off my computer?

Reader question: 2 other people share my computer and sometimes when they sign on, it goes to an AOL page instead. If we reboot the computer and go in, it will not be there.

If I go in to uninstall a program, I cannot find anything that says AOL. How can I get rid of this?

  1. Hi, you haven’t mentioned what OS you are using but lets assume you use Windows XP…Go to
    Start>Control Panel>Add&Remove Programs
Check the list. You should find a program involved AOL.Select it and remove

  2. AOL is about as much fun as a virus, and almost as hard to remove. This is what I do:

Right click on your primary HD, most likely C:, and select search.
In the search field type “*AOL*” without the quotes
You will then get a list of all files that have AOL in their names. So far I have yet to find any files that had AOL in them that were not files belonging to AOL.
Now that you have the list, delete them. You will be amazed at how many there are and how spread around they are.

Before you start this process you may want to download and install Unlocker. It is a free program that will help you delete the AOL files if they put up and resistance. You can download it from here:

Completed unsolicited and worthless random fact:
101 Dalmatians and Peter Pan are the only two Disney cartoon features with both parents that are present and don’t die throughout the movie.
