How can I get the music from my iPod onto the computer or laptop?
Reader question: I've got an iPod and I formatted my hard drive on my computer. Now I've got a new laptop and I have new music on it, completely different than the old tracks on my original computer. When I plug in my iPod to sync it with iTunes it says it will delete my music and write ONLY the CURRENT iTUNES PLAYLIST. What can I do to same my music from my iPod but still add new tracks from a different playlist on a different computer?

The first safety razor was not actually invented by King Gillette himself but by a man named William Nickerson who was Kings partner. They believed that the label bearing Nickersons name would be bad for business, plus it was Kings idea anyway.

Before you connect your iPod to the computer, open iTunes, go to the Preferences and select the Devices tab. In the resulting screen, check the box labeled, “Disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods.” Then connect your iPod.
When your iPod is connected, select it in the left panel and in the Summary screen, check the “Manually manage music” option. Presto!

The only music you can transfer from an iPod to a PC is stuff purchased from the iTunes store.
Both the iPod and the computer moreoever need to be authorised for the same iTunes store account.
This to prevent piracy (somewhat weak, but it will at least stop people casually plugging their iPods into friends’ computers and transferring the entire content).
