Historically when did music start to go downhill?

Reader question: I believe that psychedelic music killed good music with drugs being used in music.I loved black music in the 1960's like the motown sound The Supremes and Martha and the vandellas and even non motown songs like "in his kiss" and "rescue me".One also said that R&B used as dance music meaning dance music "disco" really ruined the quality of soul music!

  1. Music started to go down during the Middle Ages. Then up during the Renaissance until the end of the Industrial Revolution, then down again during the interwar years. Since the end of World War 2, it’s been constantly going up again.

  2. honestly music wasn’t ruined with the introduction of drugs to artists. Music was ruined when drugs were introduced to WHITE artists, hence vanilla ice, scientology and Tom Hanks

  3. I think that good music transcends all the fads that come out. It comes and goes like the tide, bringing in fresh stuff from time to time.

I think each generation has a tendency to think the previous generations “stuff” was the worst ever.

But to tell you the truth, what killed most great music was MONEY. The total greed of it all, squeezing crapola song after crapola song out to maximize profit. How many CD’s have you purchased, full price, only to find 90% (or more at times) is filler crap? So you got angry and felt cheated by this band you “love”. And they wonder why there is such piracy of music. Make something good consistently, and folks will buy it.

  4. This question is so subjective there will be many answers. In my opinion, music started to go downhill in the 1960′s with the Beetles. Unfortunately, they were the best at the time and the quality of music has swirling down the toilet since then.

  5. Music only “went downhill” in your mind. I can listen to and appreciate any psychedelic music, Motown, R & B, and even Disco (it’s rightfully entered its insignificance as 70s escapist dance music in Trivial Pursuit now). Black or white, psychedelic, rock, R & B, Heavy Metal, Punk, New Wave, Ska, Reggae, etc., I appreciate good music played by good musicians without making any judgements about it going anywhere because of drugs.

    Just say ‘Yes!’

  6. i think you are off track with thinking any style or drugs or whatever killed music. Id be pointing my finger at the marketing and corporations that have influenced and taken music in the wrong directions….but yes Disco sucks!
