  1. For valve timing, the cam gear will have a mark on it that says “up”, this must be facing up, at a 90 degree angle, disregard the key hole. You can confirm TDC by making sure the up mark is up and looking at the crank pulley, it will have a mark on it, this would be at 12 of clock also.

For ignition timing, you need a timing gun. You have to start the engine and hook up the timing light to your number 1 cylinder spark plug wire and move the distributor until it is at 16 degrees BTDC (before top dead center). Here is a write up that someone did, it should help you.

  2. to make sure your timing is correct, you’ll want to place the number 1 cylinder at tdc on the compression stroke. You’ll want to remove the upper timing cover. On the cam, there should be an arrow, that should be facing up. There should be indentations on either side of the cam gear that align with the cylinder head. The crank pulley has a red mark on it which should align with the arrow on the lower timing cover. If the crank is removed there is usually a mark that can be aligned with the woodruff key. The key is usually facing upwards. I find it easier to have the lower timing cover on and the crank pulley to make sure the crank is exactly where is should be.
