Does a 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier have a timing belt that needs to be changed every 100, 000 kms ?

Reader question: I am looking at buying a 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier. It has 82,000 Kms. on it and was a fleet vehicle. Any experiences with a 1997 Chevy Cavalier ? How about the the timing belt ? Thanks for any suggestions.

  1. timing belts are recomended to be changed every 100,000 kms. but my parents venture and alero are both way over 100,000 without a change lol

  2. NO!
97 2.2 or 2.4 both have a timing chain and gears
    no timing belt
these engines and trans-axles have proven to be very reliable

owned 97 4 door had 149,000 miles when we traded in
son had a 99 2 door 170,000 when we sold it had to replace air conditioning compressor at 150,000
both had to have alternators replaced in the 125,000 area which was over 6 years on each

  3. That is going to be up to the owner you if you buy the car if it were me i would change it as for i drive every thing i own hard and it would be cheaper and less time consuming to change it at the 100,000 mile mark but not knowing how you drive is a whole different story
