Confused about the Flu Vaccine and H1N1 Vaccine during pregnancy?

Reader question: I am pregnant with my first child (30 weeks) and I'm very confused about what to do about his year's vaccination plans. I discussed the matter with my family doctor and he said I should take the seasonal flu vaccine when it comes out (mid-October) then take the H1N1 vaccine when that comes out (early-mid-November), and I'm due early December.

What are other moms-to-be planning to do?

  1. I don’t plan on taking either of those and I have got into the habit of carrying a bottle of hand sanitizer with my in my purse and I have two bottles in the house. I am just going to do my best to not get the flu.

  2. I am a mom to be and I am not going to get it!
They don’t know if I could have or not a miscarriage.
Are you a 100% sure that vaccine is not going to harm your child??
With all the crap they are giving to regular vaccines, you’d think twice to get an H1N1 for yourself while you are pregnant.
In any case, I am not a Dr. I couldn’t tell you if it will harm or not your child, I just wouldn’t take the risk
    That’s my humble opinion.

  3. Im also due in December with my first and I am planning on getting the flu shot. If you get the flu shot your baby will also be vaccinated and be safe from the flu when he/she is born. December is flu season so thats why Im getting it.
But as for the H1N1 vaccination I am not going to get it. They don’t know the long term affect of it and I will not expose my baby to that until I know that it is 100000% safe.

  4. i plan on asking my doc if there are any risks for the h1n1 vaccination and weighing the options i think i will probably get it i work in food service and am around alot of people and to get h1n1 while pregnant i hear is very dangerous but i never get the flu shot.

  5. I am getting both vaccinations as will the rest of my family.

My husband travels by plane for work each week so he breathes in that recycled air twice a week. my 7 year old goes to school and everyone knows schools, especially elementary, are big germ factories! I have a 17 month old baby at home with me and Im 18 weeks pregnant. Since my new born wont be able to be vaccinated, we are all getting the vaccinations when they become available just to protect everyone in the home.

If you dont get the shot and you get the flu after your baby is born, you could pass it onto your newborn. You might not get it as severely but your baby will only be tiny and wont be able to fight it off as you will most likely be able to.

To everyone who carries hand sanitizer, I do too! My son carries it to school and we ALWAYS wash our hands and change clothes when we come home from shopping, etc. But there is no way of knowing if the person who sneezed behind you in the grocery line sneezed the swine flu germ onto you or your children. And as an adult, we know not to touch our faces, but what about our young children who often forget or dont know any better?

  6. I would get the regular flu shot only. The swine flu shot has not been adequately tested. I feel they are rushing it. You never know what dangers it could hold for pregnant women.

  7. My ob/gyn told me that his office is recommending both vaccines, and that it’s safe to get them on the same day. I’m not getting either of them, to be perfectly honest. I’m 33 years old and have never had a flu shot and have also never had the flu. I’m just going to take my chances (like I’ve done in years past) and avoid sick people, wash my hands consistently throughout the day, and use hand sanitizer. I know the flu shot is safe during pregnancy, but I didn’t have one with my other two pregnancies, so why start now? All my family members who have had the flu shot have wished (after the fact) that they hadn’t gotten it. They say having the flu is preferable to the effects of the shot. I don’t know if there’s something in my family’s gene pool that reacts with the flu shot or what, but I’d rather not take my chances! My mom was actually hospitalized a few years ago after getting the shot (her first and, consequently last, flu shot). As for the swine flu shot–that makes me really iffy. They seemed to just throw it together over night and no testing has been done on pregnant women. (Understandable if you ask me. Would YOU volunteer to be a guinea pig? I sure as hell wouldn’t!). Plus, a lot of the vaccines are being developed in China. Thanks but no thanks!

Completed unsolicited and worthless random fact:
All of the officers in the Confederate army were given copies of Les Miserables, by Victor Hugo, to carry with them at all times. Robert E. Lee, among others, believed that the book symbolized their cause. Both revolts were defeated.
