"Circle of Friends", set in 1950's Ireland, centers around Benny and Eve as they enter student life at University College, Dublin. Here Benny and Eve re-unite with their childhood friend Nan Mahon, the 'college belle'. They also encounter the handsome and charming Jack Foley, whom Benny quickly falls for. This movie is one my old favorites, and Minnie Driver's film debut performance in this film is phenomenal. Check out the book by Maeve Binchy; though I have not read the original source, I heard that it is very well-written and less fairytale-like than this one. The DVD of "Circle of Friends" has a widescreen-ish format so if you want to watch the film in better quality, buy the DVD. Otherwise, I hope you enjoyed watching this on YouTube!

@emousejapanimation she knew Jack was a stand up man who WOULD marry her knowing he made a child. That’s why; he was a safe bet. She wasn’t giving an eff about anyone but herself.

she chose jack to pin it on cuz it was easy. she knew a good man like him would take responsibility for his actions and do what was necessary, and he’s naive because he’s a virgin so he didnt question it.

@RandiSierra True, it wouldn’t be the same story without Nan’s betrayal and you do love to hate her for it…. but, you have to admit that what ever her reasons behind it, her actions were selfish and cruel.

@noutubeusrnames Well back in those days especially. She was desperate to find a father for the child, and a husband. That other guy offered to buy her a drink when she walked in, but it was the rest of her life she was dealing with. So she picked him, gorgeous, generous, sweet, wholesome, tender, etc. Wouldn’t be the same story otherwise.

So, was Jack a victim of intoxication here?……………………… I mean, when a man has sex with an intoxicated woman some say she’s being victimized by him. That she’s not in her right mind to consent. Does that apply to men too?

@RandiSierra Yes, she was looking for someone else, but couldn’t find him. She couldn’t wait one more day or week until she had a shot at someone else?
Besides, she only slept with Simon to get pregnant. She meant to trap him into marriage but he wasn’t so stupid as to marry the slut. If she cared about liking who she would be tied to she should have chosen with her heart and not her empty wallet. The last to deserve this was Bennie. URGH!!

@emousejapanimation Maybe Nan thought that if she was going to be tied to a father for her baby forever, she chose somebody she would like, and tried to pick a good guy who would do the honorable thing. Then it was somebody who wanted to have sex so it was easier. She originally was looking for someone else in the pub huh? Before she spotted him.

jack is not a saint either. from the beginning he already had an eye for nan, but she ignored him so he went for her friend. what kind of guy who is really in love with a woman would agree to marry another simply because she is pregnant? a part of him must find it agreeable to spend the rest of his life being married to nan.
